Tokyo (11th October, 2013): The Ambassador, on behalf of the Government of Pakistan, signed the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Kumamoto, Japan on 10th October, 2013. The high level Conference was attended by over 140 countries with Ministers representing nearly 50. Japan’s Minister of Environment and Minister of Foreign Affairs gave speeches as well as the Welcome Comments by UNEP Executive Director Mr. Achim Steiner. There was a video address by the Honourable Prime Minister H. E. Mr. Shinzo Abe. The theme of this Conference was to protect human health from the toxicity of the mercury across the world.
