Special Envoy of Prime Minister visits Tokyo 28th November To 2nd December

(01-12-2016): Special envoy of Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Zamir Akram is currently on a visit to Japan in connection with Pakistan’s candidature for NSG. The Special Envoy had number of significant engagements including meetings at the Japanese Foreign Ministry where a letter from the Prime Minister of Pakistan to his Japanese counterpart was delivered. The Special Envoy also called on Director General, Disarmament and Non Proliferation, Chairman JPPFL and discussed at length Pakistan’s viewpoint on inclusion in the NSG. The Envoy called upon Japan to take an objective and impartial stance vis-à-vis inclusion of Pakistan in the NSG. The Envoy explained that Pakistan wants to join NSG to acquire civilian nuclear energy to address its growing energy needs and for use for other peaceful purposes.

Interacting with media, the Special Envoy commented on the recently concluded Japan India Civil Nuclear deal and urged Japan to ensure that it was not misused and diverted towards production of weapons by India. He recalled that India has been involved in converting the nuclear technology meant for civilian purpose towards development of nuclear weapons since 1970s. Pakistan has always demonstrated responsibility in use of nuclear technology. Pakistan observes a unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing and has offered India a bilateral agreement to ban nuclear tests in future. However, there was no positive response from India.
